I purchased this jacket based on reviews on Leather-Up's website and recommendations from friends who have similar jackets from Xelement.PROS:
Jacket is heavier than it looks - this isn't "cheap" gear!
With Liner in, it blocks wind nicely and is warm while riding highway speeds in 50-deg weather.
Sleeves are long enough to prevent "ride-up" when reaching
Knit in sleeves is a bit tight, but are built that way for a reason... keeps the wind out of your sleeves if wearing with liner, and keeps sleeves from riding up from wind-push.
Adjustment snaps on sleeves are a plus to tighten sleeves up to prevent "flapping", or loosen them to let air-flow when liner is removed.
Velcro strap on wrists is a nice addition to keep unwanted wind out, and prevent flapping.
Liner zips, velcro's, and snaps... easy in, easy out... if you've ever put a liner in a military field jacket... principal is the same. (don't know why people have trouble with it)
Jacket (without liner) has 4 outside pockets with good size, and one zippered "interior" pocket behind the chest-zipper... great place for one!
Liner has additional pockets that zip or velcro closed, and loops for pens, tire-gauge, etc.
Armor is removable, but honestly don't know why you would want to.
Jacket has velcro straps to cinch up the waist for a snug fit, preventing wind when cold, and preventing "ballooning" while riding.
Without the liner, this jacket breathes like crazy... like wearing air-conditioning!
The light color should actually keep you cooler in the sunshine as it will reflect the sun's rays/heat. (would love it if they had matching gloves and chaps)
Back-zipper included for zipping onto riding pants or chaps from same manufacturer (just no matching chaps/pants for this jacket).
CONS:
Jacket does not have reflective material or piping. It is easier to see than black, but the manufacturer dropped the ball on that one, IMO.
Liner snaps in the sleeve are easily "un-snapped" when taking off the jacket, mostly because of snug fit at wrist... not a big deal... really
Jacket does not have interior pockets to duplicate liner's pockets when liner is removed. Take out liner, lose the interior pocket space.
Overall, the jacket is exactly what I was looking for in a late-Spring to early-Autumn riding jacket. Plenty of adaptability for the elements, heavy enough to know you are wearing it, but light enough to allow freedom of movement. I haven't tested water resistance, but like other's have said... it should keep you dry in light to moderate rains. AND, I hope I never have to test the armor!
Not sure what the other reviewer was complaining about... I've purchased many items from this company... no complaints here, and I will purchase again from them when I need more "gear". The jacket is exactly as described, no surprises, no complaints, no hassles.
SIZING:
Xelement clothing tend to run small. I wear a 40R suit coat for a "fitted look", but have wide shoulders and I tend to prefer my jackets (riding or otherwise) in 42-44/XL for the extra sleeve length and mobility. I ordered this jacket in XL, and it fits exactly as expected... like a Large with longer sleeves. I can wear a sweat-shirt under this jacket without it feeling tight. I feel that an XXL would have fit like my other XL, "off the rack" jackets, but for riding safety and to keep armor from rolling around, I wanted a more "fitted" look and feel.
If you want a perfect fit, order one size larger. If you want a looser fit, order 2-sizes larger.
UPDATE:
I have worn this several times in the rain, with and without the liner, and was quite pleased. With the liner in, I remained bone-dry, and with the liner out, I was not "soaked", but some moisture made it through the mesh (being a hot day, it actually felt pretty good).
I've washed the jacket twice now (light colors get dingy quickly), both times on gentle cycle in warm water with Woolite. No shrinkage, and no damage to interior mesh or armor pockets. The knit in the sleeves has loosened up a bit, but still keep the wind out and fit snug. The jacket has lost some of its stiffness and water-repellent capability after the second washing, but a quick spray with Camp-Dry (water-repellent coating) and its good as new again.
My only complaint on the jacket so far is that one of the sleeve snaps broke at the base-rivet. I used a dab of JB Weld to re-seal the broken rivet and the snap works perfectly again. Also, if you are not careful, the zippers will occasionally snag the pocket lining or pocket edging when closing the zippers. It's a minor issue which could happen to any jacket with zippered pockets, but thought I'd toss it out there.
