MotoCentric Centrek Backpack - Black Review

With the riding season in full swing, I needed a lightweight, purpose-built motorcycle backpack for my commute to work to replace my tattered, standard, cheap backpack.

After perusing multiple makes, I first sampled this backpacks smaller sibling, the MotoCentric Mototrek Backpack. (Read my review: MotoCentric Mototrek Backpack - --/Black ). It was simply too small, so I settled on the MotoCentric Centrek Backpack seen here.

The build material is excellent. It keeps its form nicely and looks great. The chest and torso straps are brilliant and all straps have elastic rings to keep excess strap from fluttering in the wind. The bag also very easily slips on and off with full gear on. The sleek shape and slippery material keep contents dry in light rain.

The size, however, is small. My laptop is on the large side of the 15" spectrum being a DELL E6510 (14.74"W x 1.3"H x 9.97"D) with a 15.6" wide screen and it just barely fits in the laptop pocket. A laptop more than an inch longer could be troublesome. Any thicker or wider and it may not slip into the sleeve.

With the laptop in place, I can still squeeze in my fully padded mesh jacket or a basic leather jacket, gloves and smaller items like a pair of sunglasses and wheel lock. Filled as described, the helmet bag will tightly clip my Medium-sized GMax 68S helmet in place. While medium in size, this helmet is somewhat larger than most with the multiple vents, exhaust vents and rear LED light assembly.

Without the helmet attached, the bag can still squeeze in a pair of jeans and t-shirt for a day trip. But the helmet will certainly not clip on over all of that.

The lack of side pockets that the smaller Mototrek backpack comes equipped with is a bit of a letdown. The extra compartment and sunglasses holder, missing on the Mototrek, are very useful for keeping items isolated rather than mixed up in the main compartment. However, with the helmet clipped on, accessibility is difficult and side pockets would be great for quick-access items. The hidden iPod slot is perfect for a cellphone with headphones.

All-in-all, I'm extremely pleased with the Centrek over the tiny Mototrek and never leave home without it. If you prefer side pockets and don't need the extra space, give the Mototrek a try (MotoCentric Mototrek Backpack - --/Black). Just remember, the helmet won't clip into place when fully loaded and carrying a laptop.

01-03 SUZUKI GSXR600: Lockhart Phillips LED Tail Light With Integrated Turn Signals - Smoke (SMOKE) Review

You can't tell anything from the photo but the description is right on. It is an exact replica of the OEM tail light so it fits perfectly and plugs right in. It does not come with instructions though and the 2 wires that splice in to the existing turn signal wires are not labeled left and right. On mine the blue was left and yellow was right. You will have to remove both seats and the cowling to get at all the screws and wires. Just cut the wires to the turn signals (make note of the ground wire, it's the one on the outside of the light bulb holder), pull them back up through the plastic fender, tie the 2 ground wires together and the other 2 wires connect one to blue and the other to yellow. Test before tightening. You can then cut the plastic fender around the side and down for your license plate. It does not come with a license plate bracket. Looks really good and works great.

Shoei RF-1100 Glacier Helmet - Large/TC-3 Review

I race in the AFM and have always used Shoei helmets because they fit my head the best and are great quality. My old RF-1000 saved me from head injury after being run off the track at 100mph (Turn 7 @ Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA) and so I went with the RF-1100 to replace it.

Just got done riding this weekend at Thunderhill again where temps were about 95-100F and the ventilation of the helmet was very welcome. I always ride with ear plugs because of wind noise can do damage to your hearing over time. Even with ear plugs, the intake noise of my race bike with it's open intake (no airbox) is quite noticeable, so I wouldn't consider this a "quiet" helmet.

Fit & construction is typical Shoei- excellent. I've worn a X-11, RF-1100 in large and I'm a large RF-1100 as well.

Two slight negatives about this helmet which isn't typical of most Shoei's:

This is a *MATTE* helmet- it's not clear coated as most helmets are. This helps the florescent yellow stripes stand out even more (and they do look great!), but it means the helmet shows fingerprints, etc. I haven't had problems cleaning the helmet from bugs, but since it was pretty windy this weekend there were fewer bugs then normal. You definitely wouldn't want to leave dead bugs on this helmet for long though.

Also, Shoei includes a note that the florescent paint will fade if the helmet is kept in the sunlight for long periods of time. So it's best to keep it in it's cover when not in use.

I picked this particular design because it goes great with my custom Helimot leathers and even bought two so I'd have a backup "just in case". However, unless you're like me and in love with this design, I'd probably recommend one of their non-matte helmets which are likely going to be easier to clean & maintain over the long term.

EDIT: Turns out this helmet is just as easy to clean as the clear coat helmets. I've been using Honda Polish and a terry cloth rag and bugs/etc come really easy and no staining. Very happy with this helmet!
