Motorcycle Saddlebags - SD4078 14Lx12Hx7W Review

In the product description it reads "Could be used as Throw Over or can be mounted(using mounting brackets)" I just got them in the mail today, and I see no mounting brackets. I imagine they could be permanently affixed by sandwiching the 'throw over' part between the seat and the fender, but that would require removal of the seat (which I'm not doing). It also reads "Two tie-downs on each bag". Well, there's one tie down on the bottom of each bag for a total of two anyway. The tie downs are metal D rings that appear to be pretty sturdy, but they're in the middle of the bag so I'm not sure if they'll flop around in the wind once I get up to highway speed. The D rings come with what appears to be a shoelace strung through it. I think I'll upgrade to some kind of tie down strap. Not only so it'll be a little more heavy duty than a shoelace, but so it can be quickly detached without untying anything. The bags are also called "zip-off", so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasently supprised to see that the bags clip on with metal clips that look pretty heavy duty. Of course un-clipping the bag from the central throw over part is a moot point unless you run it under the seat or something.

Under the buckles on the side straps are plastic quick release fasteners that are a little difficult to manipulate. I imagine a person would get used to them after opening and closing the bags a few times. The quick releases look a little weak, so we'll see how they hold up. The bags came with four little plastic things that look like keys, and there's no explanation given for them. I was, once again, pleasently surprised to find that they are, in fact, keys. You can lock the plastic fasteners so the bags can't be opened. You'd think they'd mention that in the description since it's a selling point.

The overall fit and finish is better than I thought it would be for a $60 set of saddlebags, but the construction looks a little weak. I figured the hard sides would be lined with sheets of plastic or something, and I was right, but it's not quite what I expected. The entire structure of the bags is what appears to be corrugated plastic like what they haul letters around with at the post office. The stitching looks sturdy, and I don't think they will fall apart on me, but I just thought it was worth mentioning. I guess it's not like I'll be carrying around my weight bench or anyting, so I'm sure they'll be strong enough.

The rain flap looks like it'll work... a little bit anyway. At the inside front corner (where the top flap meets the body of the bag) it looks like rain could potentially get in, but if it does I'm sure I'll figure out a way to seal it up.

I'm excited for summer so I can try them out. They fit perfectly on my 2003 Harley Davidson Sportster 883 Custom. I was initially worried about clearance on the side with the exhaust pipe, but it'll be just fine. I would be happier if there was a way to adjust the ride height of the bags, but I can just put something under the central throw over to shim it up a bit.
