Sufficient thickness, comparable to more expensive products. I'm 5'6", 197 lbs, measure 37" at waist but wear 34" Levi's, measure 39" at the bellybutton, measure 46"+ at the chest, generally wear a 44 or 46 jacket and L shirt. When I weighed 165, I wore a Med shirt to give you an idea of my frame. The Large in this jacket fits me better than the XL did. XL felt too long and bunched up when on the bike, and arms felt loose without the insulation in. I was able to wear a thick Army issue polypro under the XL with the insulation installed. The L felt very snug like I felt it should. Since most of my riding will be without insulation and with vents open (giving even more room) I decided on the Large. Like all the vents on the jacket. I bet it will work great. Never had vents on a Leather jacket before.
